Prevalence of atopy and exercise-induced bronchial lability in relatives of patients with cystic fibrosis.

چکیده
Skin tests and exercise tests were performed on children with cystic fibrosis (CF) and first-degree relatives of CF children. Positive skin tests were found in 56% of patients and 19% of relatives, but the prevalence of atopy in CF patients bore no relationship to its prevalence in their relatives. Increased 0ronchial lability, mainly due to bronchoconstriction, was present in 54% of patients and 27% of relatives. The results showed that increased prevalence of bronchial lability, but not atopy, is found in first-degree relatives of CF children, and that the abnormal lability and atopy found in CF children does not indicate a familial allergic background.

Cystic fibrosis, atopy, and airways lability.
In a survey of cystic fibrosis (CF) in the Avon area, 48 children with CF from 40 families together with 71 of their parents were studied by spirometry, exercise tests, and pinch tests. A control group of 42 young adults was similarly tested; control data for children were taken from previously published work. The prevalence of atopy (any positive prick test) in children with CF was 48%. Sensit...

Eighty five Chinese patients with diffuse or localized bronchiectasis (non-cystic fibrosis) were studied regarding the prevalence of asthma. Twenty three of the 85 had concomitant asthma, diagnosed by history and reversibility on lung function testing either spontaneously or after bronchodilator. None fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). Asthma pr...

to the severity of pulmonary involvement assessed clinically and radiologically, and with those found in asthmatic children and those with a history of wheezy bronchitis in early childhood. The lability was due not only to bronchoconstriction but to a dilatation which was greater than occurs in n...

Atopy and bronchial responsiveness to histamine, exercise and bronchodilators were investigated in 18 adult patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Reversibility of airflow limitation was measured after ipratropium bromide and terbutaline, and histamine and exercise provocation tests were performed. Histamine hyperresponsiveness was observed in 10 out of 18 patients and was not confined to those wi...
